Allegri ready to waive Milan severance to seal Napoli move

Massimiliano Allegri could give up the severance pay he is due from Milan in order to take the vacant head coach role at Napoli, according to reports emerging from Italy. The 58-year-old was sacked by the Rossoneri the day after the 2025-26 Serie A season ended and has since been heavily linked with the job at the Stadio Maradona, where he would replace Antonio Conte.

Allegri is widely expected to sign a two-year contract with the Partenopei, but he must first reach a mutual agreement with Milan to terminate his existing deal before any move can be finalised. Discussions have dragged on for several weeks without a resolution, and with pre-season fast approaching, the coach is now said to be considering a radical step to get the deal over the line.

Allegri was due to earn €5m in the second year of his Milan contract, which runs until next summer. His proposed salary at Napoli is believed to be around €4.5m per year. Milan have reportedly offered a severance package of just €500,000, representing the difference between the two salaries. The coach initially requested a payout of €2m for himself and a further €3m for his backroom staff, but those talks have stalled.

Allegri may walk away empty-handed

In the absence of an agreement, the latest reports suggest that Allegri is thinking about waiving all severance pay from Milan entirely. By doing so, he would be free to begin work with Napoli immediately, possibly within the next few weeks or even days. The move would allow him to start preparing for the new season without further delay, a priority given that pre-season training camps are already being planned across Serie A.

Napoli have been searching for a new manager since Conte's departure at the end of the campaign. Allegri, who has previously won multiple Scudetti with Juventus and led Milan to a top-four finish, is seen as the ideal candidate to restore stability and challenge for honours. However, the financial wrangling with his former employers has threatened to hold up the appointment.

If Allegri does indeed relinquish his claim to the severance, it would represent a significant gesture from a coach who is rarely willing to leave money on the table. It would also resolve a lingering issue for Milan, who have been keen to minimise the cost of parting ways with their former boss.
