Arsenal miss out on Victor Valdepenas as Fiorentina seal €8m deal

Why Arsenal were never likely to match the terms

For a club like Arsenal, the clauses attached to this move would have been difficult to stomach. The Gunners rarely sell their top young assets with such heavy sell-on percentages or future control mechanisms, and it is unlikely they would have agreed to a deal that so clearly favours the selling club further down the line. That has ultimately handed Fiorentina the edge in negotiations, even if the north Londoners had held a long-standing interest.

Valdepenas is highly rated within the Real Madrid academy setup, and his departure for a relatively modest fee might appear surprising at first glance. However, the buyback and sell-on provisions effectively mean that Madrid retain a watching brief over his development. Should he flourish in Tuscany, the 19-year-old could either be lured back to the Spanish capital or generate a significant windfall for both Fiorentina and the European champions.

For Arsenal, this represents a missed opportunity to add a promising defensive talent to their squad.
