Arsenal seal first signing of the summer as Hincapie move made permanent

Arsenal have wasted no time in their summer business, confirming the permanent signing of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen. The champions have activated the purchase option built into last season's loan agreement, securing the Ecuador defender for the long term and landing their first piece of business of the window.

The deal is done in principle, with Hincapie set to officially join on 1 July, the timing chosen to register the move in the new financial year. The fee is reported at around 34.5 million pounds plus add-ons, and the 24-year-old has put pen to a five-year contract that ties him to the club until 2031.

It is a signing rooted in evidence rather than projection. Hincapie's loan spell more than justified the commitment, the defender making 39 appearances in all competitions as Arsenal finally ended their 22-year wait for the league title. He started 20 league games for a back line that conceded just 27 goals, the meanest defence in the division.

His versatility was a major part of his value to Mikel Arteta. A natural centre-back, Hincapie spent much of the campaign deputising at left-back, with the majority of his minutes coming in that role and the rest through the middle. For a manager who prizes adaptable defenders, that flexibility made him close to indispensable.

The Emirates crowd took to him quickly. He claimed the club's Player of the Month award in both February and April, a stretch when the title race was reaching its climax, and chipped in with a goal in a draw at Wolves. Performances at the business end of a championship season tend to win over supporters, and they did.

He arrives with genuine pedigree beyond his Arsenal year. Hincapie made 166 appearances for Leverkusen, helping Xabi Alonso's side to an unbeaten domestic double in 2023-24, and started the Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in his debut season in north London. This is a defender accustomed to the biggest occasions.

The signing also looks like the opening move of a busy summer. Arsenal remain keen on Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers and Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi, and are in talks for Leicester teenager Jeremy Monga, suggesting Hincapie is the first of several additions as the champions look to build on their success.
