Chelsea have beaten Inter Milan to the signing of Marco Palestra, with the Premier League side now set to wrap up the transfer after striking agreements with both Atalanta and the player. The 21-year-old, comfortable at right-back, left-back and left wing-back, had been a target for the Serie A champions, who looked to be in pole position just a fortnight ago. But a decisive late push from the Blues has turned the race on its head.

Italian sources report that Chelsea have doubled the salary offered by Inter. The Nerazzurri had proposed a €2.5m-per-year deal and had been in talks with Palestra's agent since Monday. However, the London club have tabled a six-year contract worth €5m annually plus performance-related bonuses, which the player has now accepted. Inter have decided not to enter a bidding war, leaving the path clear for Chelsea.

Agreement reached with Atalanta

On the club side, Chelsea have settled on a fee with Atalanta. The base transfer is set at €57m, with an additional €3m in easily achievable bonuses, and a 10% sell-on clause inserted into the deal. The final bureaucratic and legal details are expected to be ironed out later today, after which the contract will be formalised. Palestra had previously given his green light to both Chelsea and Inter, but has left the decision to Atalanta, who will accept the superior offer from the Premier League side.

The Italy international spent last season on loan at Cagliari in Serie A, where he made 37 appearances across all competitions. That experience has helped him catch the eye of several top clubs, with his versatility and energy seen as ideal for a modern full-back. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is understood to have held conversations with the player in recent days to convince him of the project at Stamford Bridge.

For Inter, the disappointment is clear. They had been confident of securing Palestra earlier in the window, but Chelsea's willingness to go significantly higher on wages and the transfer fee proved too much to match. The Nerazzurri are now expected to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements. Meanwhile, Chelsea continue their aggressive recruitment drive, adding another young talent to a squad already packed with promising players.

The deal is yet to be officially announced, but with all parties in agreement, confirmation is expected imminently. Palestra becomes the latest addition to Chelsea's rebuilding phase under their new-look sporting structure. Fans will be eager to see how the Italian adapts to the pace and physicality of English football. For latest news on this developing story, stay tuned.
