Julian Alvarez down to two transfer options as £150m saga nears conclusion

The summer's most protracted transfer saga shows no sign of a swift resolution, but the reality for Julian Alvarez may be that his next club is already decided - even if he is not ready to admit it. Having pushed hard to leave Atletico Madrid at the start of the window, the 24-year-old now finds himself with only two viable destinations, both of which would require a monumental outlay.

Atletico remain adamant that Alvarez will not move for anything less than a staggering fee, believed to be in the region of £150 million. That asking price has already scared off a host of suitors. That leaves Premier League side Arsenal and Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain as the only remaining options. Both clubs have the financial muscle to potentially meet the £150 million price tag, though neither appears eager to do so without some creative structuring. Arsenal have been linked with a swap plus cash proposal involving Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, though such a deal is considered fanciful by most observers. PSG, meanwhile, are in the market for a marquee forward and could be tempted to make Alvarez their statement signing.

If neither Arsenal nor PSG bite, the likelihood is that Alvarez will remain at the Civitas Metropolitano for at least another season. He is under contract and Atletico are under no pressure to sell at a discount. The Argentine international will soon return to training in Madrid, and unless one of the two interested parties makes a formal approach in the coming days, the summer's biggest move may simply fizzle out.

For now, the ball is in the court of Arsenal and PSG. Both have the ambition and, in theory, the resources to do a deal.
