Manchester United secure the land for their new 100,000-seat stadium in major Old Trafford milestone
United have acquired the bulk of the site needed to build the biggest sporting arena in the UK, clearing the project's single biggest hurdle and moving the new Old Trafford from vision to reality.
Manchester United have secured the majority of the land required to build their new 100,000-seat stadium, a major milestone in the long-term plan to transform the Old Trafford area and deliver what would become the biggest sporting arena in the United Kingdom.
The club confirmed it has acquired a 25-acre site located roughly 350 metres north-west of the current ground, purchased from Indurent, a leading provider of industrial space. United said it will work directly with the businesses affected by the plans to support them through the transition. Land assembly had long been seen as the single biggest obstacle to the project, so reaching agreement on the bulk of the site is the breakthrough the scheme needed.
The new stadium sits at the heart of a sweeping regeneration of the district. The wider 370-acre project is expected to deliver around 15,000 new homes, including affordable housing, create 48,000 jobs locally and more than 90,000 nationally, and add over 7 billion pounds a year to the UK economy. The club has worked closely with Trafford Council and the Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation to ensure the location works cohesively with the wider regeneration strategy.
Collette Roche, chief executive of Manchester United's new stadium development, said the announcement represents a significant step forward. "Today's news highlights the progress we're making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development," she said. Roche added that securing the right land had been critical. "This is a generational opportunity that is fully aligned with both local and national growth ambitions. Securing the right land for our new home has been absolutely critical, and the land we've acquired gives us the stage to deliver a truly world-class stadium that honours our past and is ready for our future."
The Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation is set to publish its vision for the area on 9 July, when further detail on the stadium site and a formal consultation period will be revealed.
