Nmecha rejects Newcastle and only wants Man United as INEOS close in on £86m Dortmund deal

Manchester United are accelerating their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, with the Germany international turning down interest from Newcastle United because he only wants to join the Red Devils. INEOS are now in close contact with Nmecha's camp as United look to land one of European football's most sought-after box-to-box midfielders this summer.

Nmecha, 25, has established himself as one of the Bundesliga's most complete central midfielders since joining Dortmund from Wolfsburg in 2023. His combination of physicality, technique and forward runs has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, but his preference is clear: he wants to return to England and he wants to do it at Old Trafford. Nmecha came through Manchester City's academy before moving to Germany, making the United link feel like a genuine homecoming rather than simply the biggest offer on the table.

Dortmund are willing to sell for the right price. After initial suggestions of a €120 million valuation, BVB have softened and are understood to be open to a deal in the region of £70-86 million. United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell has been driving the approach and contact with the player's representatives is ongoing. The two clubs are not yet at the formal offer stage, but United's intent is serious and Dortmund are not ruling out a deal.

Newcastle attempted to enter the race but were swiftly rebuffed. Nmecha has no interest in anything other than United, which hands the Red Devils a significant edge. When a player of this calibre actively shuts down rival suitors, it removes the bidding war dynamic that clubs like Dortmund often rely on to maximise transfer fees. United know they have leverage and intend to use it.

For manager Ruben Amorim, Nmecha would represent a significant upgrade in the engine room. His energy, pressing intensity and goals from midfield are precisely the profile Amorim has identified as missing from his squad, and a player already proven in Champions League knockout football gives United a ready-made contributor from day one rather than a development project.

The coming weeks will be decisive. United want to move on their key targets before the market fully heats up, and with Nmecha's preference firmly established, the Dortmund asking price is the only remaining obstacle. If INEOS can bridge that gap, this transfer has all the hallmarks of a deal that gets done - a player who wants the club, a club that wants the player, and a seller who knows the market is now or never.
