Porto beat Liverpool and Arsenal to Norwegian wonderkid Eirik Granaas
The 16-year-old midfielder has sealed a €1.8m move to the Portuguese giants, snubbing a host of Europe's elite clubs.
Porto have secured the signing of highly-rated Norwegian teenager Eirik Granaas, beating Liverpool, Arsenal and a host of other top European sides to his signature. The 16-year-old midfielder has already travelled to Portugal to complete the move from Fredrikstad, with medical tests and contract signing imminent.
The latest news emerging from Portugal confirms that Porto have won the race for one of Scandinavia's most promising young talents. Both Liverpool and Arsenal had been closely monitoring Granaas, with reports indicating that the Premier League clubs had sent scouts to watch him in action. Arsenal even dispatched a representative earlier this year to track his progress.
European heavyweights left disappointed
The list of clubs credited with interest in Granaas reads like a who's who of European football. Chelsea, Newcastle, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Real Madrid were all linked with the youngster. However, it was Porto who moved decisively to secure the deal, with Club Brugge also pushing hard for the teenager but ultimately falling short.
Porto's swift action has paid off. According to multiple Portuguese outlets, the club will pay an initial €1.8m (£1.5m) for 100% of the player's economic rights. A further €1.5m (£1.3m) in performance-related bonuses could follow, while Fredrikstad have negotiated a 15% sell-on clause. Granaas is expected to pen a three-year contract, the maximum length permitted under FIFA regulations for a player of his age.
Rapid rise through Norwegian ranks
Granaas has already built an impressive reputation back home. He made his professional debut for Norwegian league side Fredrikstad at just 15 years old and has since featured nine times for the first team this season, scoring once. Described as one of the country's biggest prospects, his arrival at Porto represents a significant coup for the Portuguese club's recruitment strategy.
The plan is for Granaas to initially join Porto's B team, but both parties are clear that there is a well-defined pathway to the senior squad. The Dragons have a strong track record of developing young talent, and the Norwegian will hope to follow in the footsteps of those who have graduated to the first team in recent years.
Liverpool and Arsenal's scouting networks had clearly identified Granaas as a player of considerable potential.
